‘One minute and 15 seconds of batteries’ before we 'run out' globally: Bjorn Lomborg

One minute and 15 seconds of Global Electricity Consumption

Copenhagen Consensus Centre President Bjorn Lomborg says the world has enough batteries to “cover one minute and 15 seconds of global electricity consumption”.

“Fundamentally, we’re not going to go renewable or full-renewable any time soon,” Mr Lomborg told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

Mr Lomborg said it’s “great” to have solar if you are in California – however, “you can’t rely on solar or wind because they’re fundamentally unreliable”.

“And so, you need backup,” he said.

Mr Lomborg added people have an “absurd idea” that “we can just go to batteries” for backup.

“Batteries are not anytime soon going to be able to pick up most of the slack. Right now, the world has enough batteries globally to cover one minute and 15 seconds of global electricity consumption,” Mr Lomborg said.

“So we have one minute and 15 seconds of batteries, and then we run out.”
