Is Moldovan sentiment divided over joining the European Union? | DW News

In Moldova, polls have closed in the country’s presidential election. The country is also holding a referendum on joining the EU. Moldova is a former Soviet republic which borders Ukraine. Sandwiched between the two countries is the breakaway Russian-backed province of Transnistria. Fears are high Moscow is meddling in the voting process, as there are reports of ballots being bought with Russian cash. Incumbent president and pro-European politician Maia Sandu seeks a second term in the country of 2.6 million people.
