Geo Politics

Giorgia Meloni has won the elections in Italy, and is going to become the country’s first woman prime minister. In more ways than one, she broke a rigid glass ceiling in Italian politics to emerge victorious. Meloni’s alliance has claimed about 43% of the vote. That gives her right-wing alliance 114 seats in the Senate, where 104 are required to claim majority. Giorgia Meloni’s ‘Brothers of Italy’ party is estimated to have won about 22 – 26% of the vote. Italy’s main centre-left group, the Democratic Party (PD), conceded defeat. But across the world, Giorgia Meloni’s rise to power is being viewed as problematic, for what are alleged to be her “far-right” proclivities. Such is the paranoia that the European Union chief, Ursula von der Leyen even went on to threaten Italy saying it “has tools” to deal with the electoral outcome in Rome. What does her victory mean for Europe, the EU and for liberal values? Watch to know more.
