On January 5, Mexican authorities arrested Ovidio Guzman, a son of the infamous drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, in a security operation in the city of Culiacan. This capture has caused a surge of retaliatory attacks from cartel members, turning Culiacan into a war zone. In response, the Mexican government has deployed tanks and heavily armed soldiers to combat the violence. Videos show that military aircraft were also used to attack the cartels. The arrest of El Chapo’s son is being hailed as a victory against one of Mexico’s deadliest cartels by Mexico’s Defense Minister, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, who described it as a “decisive blow” against the Pacific cartel. Reports indicate that parts of Culiacan, a stronghold of the Sinaloa cartel, have been taken over by cartel members.
