Reason for Dismissal?
Almost two years after the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Ukrainian armed forces, Valery Salushnyi, has been relieved of his post. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyi on Thursday in his evening video message in Kiev. Colonel General Olexander Syrskyj was appointed as his successor, the previous commander of the Ukrainian land forces.
Under Salushnyj’s leadership, the Ukrainian troops withstood the Russian invasion in February 2022. Over the course of the first year of the war, they even recaptured occupied parts of the Kharkiv region and the regional capital Kherson in the south. Salushnyi was also the architect of the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the summer of 2023, which, however, made little progress against heavily fortified Russian defences.
