The launch of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941 was spectacular. Three German armies smashed their way into the Soviet Union. One headed for Leningrad, another advanced towards Moscow and the third was directed to seize oil, industrial and agricultural resources. Soon 650,000 Soviet troops were trapped at Kiev, but the defiant city of Odessa was still holding out and the Crimean Peninsular remained in Soviet hands. The bloody battle for the Russian homeland had only just begun.
