Analyst: Israel has the upper hand in its attacks in Lebanon, though Hezbollah yet to be defeated
Israel’s military forces have hit the Lebanese capital Beirut with a fresh series of airstrikes in the early hours of Sunday morning. Huge blasts have rung out in the southern suburbs of Beirut after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) called on inhabitants to evacuate buildings in the area. Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah in its stronghold in southern Beirut. According to the Lebanese health ministry, nearly 2,000 people have been killed by Israeli strikes in Lebanon since September 23rd, 2024. On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron called for an arms embargo on Israel in an interview on radio station France Inter. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded in a recorded statement, condemning Macron and other leaders who have called for a halt to weapons deliveries to Israel. Netanyahu added: “What a disgrace. Israel will win with or without their support.” DW interviews Laura Blumenfeld, Middle East Analyst and Senior Fellow at the Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies at Johns Hopkins SAIS. #hezbollah #netanyahu #middleeast
